Properties: it is white monoclinic crystal, cold crystal is flat diamond, while hot crystal is amorphous; specific weight is 3.1, M.P. 962^οC, b.p. 1560^οC, soluble in water, aqueous solution is bitter and salty, toxic; insoluble in alcohols, almost insoluble in Hcl; will loose crystalline water and become white powder at 1OO^οC; stable in the air, toxic to human and animals.

Emergency measures: if take it orally by mistake,seek medical help immediately; if contact skin, wash with clean water.

Use: it is used in the production of barium salts; in heat treatment in the steel industry and as recarburizer instead of NaCl; also used in the treatment of boiler water, preparation of pigments; as mordant and dulling agent in textiles and leather industries.
